Why Sharing Your Story Matters

"Why Sharing Your Story Matters"

From Behind the Lens to In Front: My Journey with Personal Branding

Hey there! I'm Josh, the face behind JBAW Productions, and I want to share a story that might just change how you think about personal branding in the video industry. It’s a journey filled with challenges, realizations, and ultimately, growth.

The Wake-Up Call

You know that moment when everything clicks? For me, it was a combination of mentor advice, a course I took, and a stark realization: my work was subjective, but my relationships weren’t. Clients weren’t just hiring my skills; they were hiring me. But here's the kicker – I wasn’t putting myself out there at all. When I moved from Texas to Pennsylvania during COVID, I faced a significant challenge. Suddenly, I was in a new place, trying to reestablish myself in an unfamiliar market. As the months went by and work became scarce, it hit me hard: no one knew Josh. They knew JBAW Productions, but they didn’t know the person behind the brand.

Question for you:Have you ever felt invisible in your own business? What steps did you take to change that?

The Biggest Fear: Talking on Camera

Let me be real with you – the thought of talking on camera terrified me. I’d freeze up, feeling like a total impostor. My biggest fear was just talking on camera; I couldn’t do it at first. It felt so vulnerable! But I knew I had to push through that fear if I wanted to build my brand. So, I started my first video with a simple truth: "One of the scariest things in filmmaking is filming yourself." That honesty helped me break the ice and connect with viewers right from the start.

What about you? What fears or insecurities do you face when it comes to sharing your story?

Finding My Groove

Here’s what I learned: authenticity trumps perfection every time. At first, I couldn’t look directly at the camera; I would freeze up completely. So instead, I looked off-camera. Talking with my hands helped too! I realized that having a theme for each video allowed me to freestyle without feeling scripted.I developed a hook for each video: “Hey, it’s day 40,” or “Happy Wednesday,” or “I’ve been thinking…” This simple approach helped me get started each time. It became easier to share what was on my mind—my struggles, my victories, and everything in between.

Have you ever found that being open about your struggles has helped others connect with you? How did it feel?

The Transformation

The most surprising part of this journey? It has completely changed how I work with clients. Now, when I'm shooting interviews or collaborating on projects, I understand their fears and hesitations on a whole new level. This newfound empathy has made me not only a better filmmaker but also a better communicator.I’ve even inspired some peers along the way! Knowing that my journey resonates with others is such a rewarding feeling.

How do you think sharing your vulnerabilities could impact your relationships with clients or colleagues?

The Impact Beyond Likes

Some days, I still wonder if anyone cares or wants to see me. But then I hear from someone who says I've inspired them or connect with a client who chose me because they felt like they knew me. That’s when it hits home – this isn’t just about likes or engagement; it’s about building genuine connections.I’ve come to realize that many people are silently watching and learning from what we share. Those silent viewers might just be your next big client or collaborator!

Have you ever underestimated the impact of your presence online? What stories have you told that resonated with others?

Looking Ahead

As I continue this journey of personal branding through video content, my hope is twofold: First, that it attracts my ideal clients who resonate with my character and values; second, that it inspires others in our industry to embrace their own stories.I’m not selling anything here – just being transparent and sharing who I am. My goal is to encourage others to take that leap of faith and put themselves out there.

What’s one small step you can take today to start sharing your story more authentically?

Your Turn

So here’s my challenge to you: Don’t worry about being perfect. Just be you! Share your story—your process, your thoughts—whatever feels right for you. You might be surprised at the doors it opens and the connections you make along the way.Remember, every story matters. Whether it inspires one person or many, putting yourself out there can create ripples of impact beyond what you might imagine.

Let’s keep this conversation going! After all, we're all on this journey together, and your story is just as important as mine.
